Defter Privacy Policy

Last updated: October 17, 2026

Your notes stay yours. Defter does not collect your data. Everything you write or say stays on your phone. On iPhone, syncing with your own iCloud is optional and off until you turn it on.

This policy describes the Defter app for iPhone and for Android, provided by NITRONIUM LLC (“we”). Contact: support@nitronium.de.

What Defter stores on your device

The notes you type or dictate (text, type, time, and for voice notes only their length), daily summaries, weekly reflections, and a few settings such as your evening reminder time.

This data is kept in the app's private local database on your phone. Only Defter and its own widget and sharing features can read it.

Voice notes are transcribed live; the audio is not recorded or saved. The text becomes a note only when you save it.

What we receive

Nothing. Defter has no account, no servers of ours, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking, and it contains no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs. We cannot see your notes. The Android app does not even request permission to use the internet.

Optional iCloud sync (iPhone only)

On iPhone, Defter can keep your notes in sync between your own devices using iCloud. It is off by default and turns on only when you switch it on in Settings and confirm. When it is on, your notes, daily summaries and weekly reflections are stored in your private iCloud account (Apple's CloudKit private database) and are covered by Apple's iCloud terms and privacy policy. We run no servers for this and cannot see or access that data. Voice and AI processing still happen only on your device.

Turning sync off stops further syncing; copies already in iCloud stay there until you remove them (iOS Settings › your name › iCloud › Manage Storage). While sync is on, deleting all data in Defter also removes it from your other synced devices.

The Android app has no sync. Your notes stay on that phone.

On-device processing

iPhone: speech-to-text uses Apple's speech recognition on your iPhone. Summaries, weekly reflections, answers in Ask and note-type guesses use Apple Intelligence's on-device model. The first time you use a language, iOS may download speech or language models from Apple. That download is performed by Apple and is covered by Apple's privacy policy; Defter does not send your content to Apple or anyone else.

Android: speech-to-text uses Android's on-device speech recognizer. Defter never switches to cloud recognition: if on-device recognition is not available for your language, voice capture simply does not work and you can type instead. Android may download an on-device speech language pack for you; that is done by your device (through Google) under Google's privacy policy, not by Defter, which has no internet access and sends no content anywhere. Summaries, weekly reflections, morning suggestions and Ask currently use simple rules that run on your phone; there is no AI model in the Android app.

Permissions

You can change these at any time in iOS Settings, or on Android in Settings › Apps › Defter › Permissions.

Exporting and sharing

Defter shares data only when you choose “Export as Markdown”. It creates a file on your phone and opens the system share sheet; where the file goes is up to you. On Android, that temporary file is removed when you delete all data.

Backups

iPhone: depending on your iOS settings, your iPhone's data, including Defter's, may be included in device or iCloud backups made by Apple. We have no access to these backups.

Android: Defter turns off Android's automatic app backup, so your notes are not included in Google backups. This also means they do not move to a new phone by themselves; use “Export as Markdown” if you want to keep a copy.

Deleting your data

In Defter, Settings › “Delete all data” removes every note, summary and reflection. Removing Defter from your phone deletes its local data from the device (on Android you can also clear it in Settings › Apps › Defter › Storage). Notes you “let go” are kept in your archive until you delete all data or the app. If you used iCloud sync on iPhone, see “Optional iCloud sync” above for removing the iCloud copies.

Children

Defter is not directed at children, and because we collect no data, we collect none from children either.

Your rights

Because we hold none of your personal data, there is nothing for us to access, correct or delete on our side. If you have a question or request, write to support@nitronium.de.

Changes

If this policy changes, we will update the date above, and the new version will apply from then on.
